SINGERS WHO PERFORMED OCCASIONALLY AT VAUXHALL GARDENS 1826–1852

A number of special musical events took place at the gardens during the 19th century, either concerts in aid of charities, or special operatic performances, that attracted some of the great singing stars of the day. According to W. S. Scott [p.78] Henry Rowley Bishop had been brought in by J. R. Planché, Somerset Herald and songwriter, in 1826, to attract high quality singers for a series of concerts organised by Hughes and Gye. Hughes was apparently 'passionately fond of music, and believed that a grand concert would be more attractive at Vauxhall than any spectacular entertainment.' Only patchy records survive of these events.
